my internet

1. My Internet doesn't use flash, evahhh. Unless it's a video, and then only for video.

2. My Internet prefers html text wherever possible.

3. My Internet lets me use my email address or my usual username as a username. It doesn't give me one or make me create a new one.

4. My Internet lets me use a password entirely of my own choosing. It doesn't make me add numbers or Capitals wH3re I don't want them.

5. My Internet values simplicity and clarity over almost everything else.

6. My Internet prefers tools that I'm familiar with like Flickr, YouTube, iTunes, Google etc. It doesn't reinvent convention for the sake of it.

7. My Internet has a screen resolution of 1024x768. Today. As I write this. That will change sooner than you think.

8. My Internet has absolute urls for everything.

9. My Internet may not have exactly the same colours as My Printed Matter.

10. If My Internet was forced to choose between speed and visual lushness, speed would win easily.

11. My Internet has no back, forward or print buttons. That's what My Browser is for.

12. My Internet has contact details clearly accessible right from the word go.

13. My Internet will not work for everyone, everywhere, always, at the same time, all the time. It will especially not work for CEO's Aunties.

smashLAB is "a strategic interactive agency that facilitates breakthrough online communications." hefty words, but looking at their sites, i believe it. these pages all have a lot of information and a lottt going on, but through hierarchy, organization, pattern, and a good dose of sexiness too, these sites are a breeze to visit, even though i might not normally be interested in their content. yum!

it took me a moment to figure out the nav for this site, but this is only because it's a hub for his many other sites. i am jealous of his programming skillz. also all of his skillz. he speaks/lives in japan, runs a book publishing house, a music press, and of course many sites. all of them are a treat and actual journey to figure out the context and reason for the site.

i really love the simple black on white, tiny navigation frame on the left, bright colors to differentiate sections, plus a few animated GIFs for interest. the geometric and ordered quality of all his works is one i'd like to try more; he is the main inspiration for my stop-motion video project, actually. it is still a work in progress.

crisp, three-column layout with left and right static that makes confusion nearly impossible. the links will always be on the left, the content will be in the center, and the description will be on the right. the minimal times + white treatment detracts nothing from the real importance, this designer's portfolio.

sean freeman's website not only offers beautiful illustrated type but an elegant solution for web design. although he is only working with images, unlike the sites we are doing for class, i think i can take some inspiration from his "bucket" solution that is perfectly small enough to not detract from the main frame above. however, it is still readable and allows for a larger number of buckets that can lead directly to the page the viewer is looking for. the black, grey, and white is the nice finish for a minimal solution that works.

this design is so clean! all the information is right there! white gray and one color. it's the indexhibit web application that is free code for any person looking to put a web portfolio online. lean on personality but that's where the designer adds as much or little touch that they like. so good.

& scuba sites are disastrous, as far as i can tell. plenty below, but no matter how deeply i googled i couldn't find one simple, clear, or appealing diving site. nobody seems to have taken up our idea of a lush underwater adventure/life aquatic/discovery channel documentary style. let's be the first.

this guy's personal blog has a lot a lot of information on it but is so well organized that it's actually a pleasure to surf through all those links below the header (unlike...most). and the tabs at the top are so effective for navigating through his life, i'd kill to manage to keep everything so compartmentalized without feeling restrained.

i often have many navigational, usability, or load timing issues with flash sites, but this is one of the best i've seen in awhile. i keep trying to show people it but forget what it is called and how i even found it in the first place. so here we go (try resizing yr browser!). and it doesn't hurt that i like their work lots, too.
